Samsung partners with HydroGen to distribute fuel cell power plants

GadgetsTrust us, this ain’t the first time we’ve heard “Samsung” and “fuel cell” mentioned in the same breath, but signing up with another firm to be its “sole and exclusive distributor” of fuel cell power plants sounds pretty serious. Sure enough, Sammy has inked an agreement with US-based HydroGen, and will soon be selling its phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) power plants in Asia, the Middle East and in other unspecified regions. Reportedly, Samsung is planning to use HydroGen’s technologies to “supply heat and electricity from fuel cell power plants to Korean chemical plants or energy providers and expand its business into the hydrogen fuel cell market.” Yeah, we’d say locking things in with a hydrogen fuel cell manufacturer ’til 2015 is a pretty good way to accomplish that.

Vuzix, once known as Icuiti, is back with a modified video eyewear design for gamers which they claim is a world’s first. The AV902-C starts with their AV902 headset’s twin 640 x 480 LCDs. They then add the ability to segment multi-player displays so that the person wearing the AV902-C only sees their half (2-player) or quadrant (in 4-player) of the screen presented as a 62-inch virtual display. Up to four of the AV902-C’s can be daisy chained together for distraction-free (and cheat-free) gaming. Available February for an undisclosed price.

iPod Speaker for your Bicycle

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

The iHome2Go iH85B is the new speaker made specifically for bicycles, and to be used with iPods, that is, excluding the old-school Shuffle.

It was created by iHome, a company that already has a big list of iPod related products, so we’re safe to say that the quality should be good. The speaker case is placed on the bike’s frame, while the audio controllers are located on the handlebar - so you can easily keep cycling while raising the volume, or picking a specific song.

In case you don’t have a bicycle to use with the iHome2Go, that costs $80, it can also be used in other scenarios, like a picnic or the beach, and since it has the water-resistant detail, there isn’t much to worry about.

Samsung LN40A650T, LN46A650T, LN52A650T

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Samsung’s brand new highend LCD HDTVs for 2008 are the Series 7, and Series 6 models. We will be talking about the Samsung Series 6 in this post, which consist of three different sized models, all ending with A650T, so this could also be known as the Samsung 650 models. The Series 6 models are one step down from the Series 7 models, but are practically identical, and only lack a USB 2.0 port and the internal 1GB flash storage.

The Series 6 offers a full HD 1080p LCD screen for the highest HD format, and is available in three different sizes as the 40-inch Samsung LN40A650T, 46-inch LN46A650T and the 52-inch LN52A650T. Just like the Series 7 LCD range, these models offer an Ethernet connection which enables easy access to on demand real time information, such as weather reports, news, and stock information.

As well as having a 1080p HD screen, the models also offer 120Hz Auto Motion Plus, which provides smooth, non juddery images, a high 178 degree viewing angle, and a very fast 4ms response time for sharp images during fast motion scenes.

Inputs includes a very healthy selection of four HDMI 1.3 inputs, allowing lots of expansion room for future HDMI devices. The Series 6 LCDs should be available in March 2008.

lightsaber lamps for true star wars geeks

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

I’ll start out by saying that I’ve always enjoyed the Star Wars franchise (except for the Ewoks and Jar Jar), but I’ve never as nuts about the series as say, that girl on American Idol last night who showed up for the audition wearing a Princess Leia outfit, hair buns and all. These lightsaber lighting fixtures are made for her and for those who follow in her footsteps.

Sure, these aren’t the most beautiful lights you’ll ever lay your eyes on, but they are perfect for serious Star Wars junkies. They’re not fancy, running on AAA batteries, and emanating a subtle LED glow. They come in both green (Jedi) and red (Sith) variants, but no matter which one you choose, they’ll each bring a bit of the Light Side to your dark room. The sabers measure in at just under 16-inches tall, making them good for a bedside table, or on either side of your couch.

They’re available now from NCSX for $23 each.

AirMail: the manila folder MacBook Air sleeve gets real

Sure, we were all quite awestruck when Steve casually pulled the MacBook Air out from within a manila envelope on stage, but we didn’t exactly expect to-be owners to snag one from the supply cabinet and put it to use. Nevertheless, the quick-thinking duo that is Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans had an idea to take Apple’s clever marketing icon and create — surprise, surprise — a fully functional case resembling a manila folder. Reportedly, this sleeve is handmade from “durable upholstery-grade vinyl and lined with fuzzy, soft fleece,” which should protect your forthcoming MBA from all but the nastiest of bumps. Supposedly, you can pre-order one now for $29.95 and expect it to arrive right alongside your new rig, but if these truly are handmade, we’d go ahead and expect a backlog. Oh, if only we were this clever.

FlipStart retail price nosedives, we’re a little worried

It’s one thing to have a price reduction, it’s another thing to go from $1500 to $700 — more than half off — in a single day. Then again, if you want to move units, there’s nothing like a fire sale. Perhaps the FlipStart 2.0 is just around the corner — or perhaps these things simply weren’t moving as fast as Paul Allen might have hoped.
