Novell focuses on integration with SuSE Linux Enterprise 11

Friday, March 21st, 2008

Cheers to those Linux users, as Novell is going to be releasing the successor of Linux 10, which is the SuSE Linux Enterprise 11. Sadly, Novell has only released some details at this point, but look on the bright side, at least it’s going to be released. Novell stated that, SuSE Linux Enterprise 11 will work on a vast variety of products such as edge and infrastructure servers, to data centers and servers.

This platform will be created as an appliance. Novell said the new release will aim to harmoniously integrate mixed-IT environments. Novell outlined a broad focus for the SuSE Linux Enterprise release which includes supporting appliance development in the data center, helping customers looking for easier UNIX to Linux relocation. Other than that, the leveraging of Xen technologies to deliver virtualization, which will help realizing the benefits of green IT and increasing technology for Windows optimization.

As for the “small” release of information, Novell stated that the company is still gathering a wide range of software and hardware partners and ISVs for the project. Let’s just cross our fingers and hope for a big surprise.

NYC cab drivers lobby for right to use cellphones on duty

Friday, March 21st, 2008

Posted Mar 21st 2008 5:19AM by Darren Murph
Filed under: cellphones, TransportationAbout this time last year, the cab drivers of New York City were taking a stand against GPS installations. This year, they’ve taken to the streets of downtown Manhattan in order to rally for the right to use cellphones while on duty. For those unaware, NYC cabbies are currently disallowed from using hands-free apparatuses while on the clock, and those in the profession are arguing that having one would enable them to feel safer and more connected to the outside world. Unfortunately, the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission doesn’t seem ready to budge, as it reportedly replied to the lobbying by stating that “cellphone abuse has resulted in many instances of drivers leaving their passengers feeling improperly served and downright unsafe.” What’s a cab driver got to do to get his / her Snake on, huh?

Tesla ready to bust out eco-friendly Roadsters

Friday, March 21st, 2008

In efforts to protect the environment these days, many companies have begun designing energy efficient products. Tesla, is a major car manufacturer that plans to deliver energy efficient vehicles soon. You may or may not remember one of their main green cars, the Roadster, anyway, after many delays, company problems, and price increases, the car is finally ready for production. In fact, it is being produced right this very second.

Tesla touts that this is “the only zero emission electric vehicle in production today,” which is actually not true, because there are a lot of cars and companies making cars that are more energy efficient. However, it is the only energy efficient car that is able to hit 125 mph. One of the things that will turn people off from buying the Roadster is the hefty price tag that comes with it. Even though, in the end it will be worth it from all the gas it will save, but 100 grand is still a 100 grand.

Another bad thing about this car is that in the beginning they will only be able to pump out one to two cars per week. So far, around 900 people have shelled out the cash to reserve a Roadster. Most of which, as you can imagine have some money they can easily part with, ranging from Dustin Hoffman to George Clooney to Arnold Schwarzenegger and even Mahalo’s CEO Jason Calacanis.

I think that if only Tesla managed to lower the price of their car, many more people would buy it. However, it is a good effort by them to produce a car that will greatly help out the environment, not too mention I think the Roaster falls into a ‘slightly’ different category than most eco-friendly cars and could be worth the ‘premium’.

Sprint offers faster more realistic mobile browsing

Friday, March 21st, 2008

Have you heard that Sprint is now offering enhanced mobile Web browsing on all Web-enabled Sprint phones? Sprint is now the first U.S. carrier to do so with the addition of the OpenWeb solution from Openwave Systems, Inc. This is a major breakthrough for users that want to surf the Web on their mobile phones.

Unless you own an iphone I bet you do not really enjoy surfing the Web on your cell phone. The speed is not the issue - it’s the convoluted formats, the endless scrolling and the chore of navigating in general.

So you may be wondering how much better the enhanced mobile browsing could be. Well, according to Sprint and Openwave anyone surfing the Web on their PDA/smartphone cell phones will enjoy seeing websites just as they would on their home PCs. Most any website visited will look normal only smaller. Even if the site has not been optimized for mobile access, Openwave OpenWeb will adapt the site layout to fit a mobile phone screen while also improving the speed at which data can be accessed from the website.

It gets better – the user does not need to do anything except sign up with Sprint or continue to be a Sprint customer.

USB Charger for batteries

Friday, March 21st, 2008

Most USB chargers only support one type of battery, but this one is capable of charging 2 different types at the same time: AA and AAA.

Its capacity is normal - 4 batteries - and to indicate if the charging session is over there are 2 LED lights. I consider it a must-have-item for everyone that uses gadgets with batteries, because you only need a USB port to recharge them and shoot more photos, listen to music, or keep doing whatever you were doing.

Cheap and useful - $12.

Designed with one extra USB expansion port.

Adjustable tv stand for Wii fanatics

Friday, March 21st, 2008

I’ve never heard anyone complain that their Wii skills are hampered by their inability to adjust their tv screen to eye level when they’re standing, but then again, I don’t know any true Wii fanatics (only normal Wii players who only occasionally get caught in 15-hour Guitar Hero marathons). For the obsessed, this stand adjusts to sitting and standing positions with a remote control.

Available at Thanko’s Rare Mono Shop (in Japanese) for about $675.

Researchers find folks prefer robots that engage in small talk

Friday, March 21st, 2008

Posted Mar 20th 2008 3:45PM by Donald Melanson
Filed under: RobotsWhile it doesn’t exactly come as much of a surprise, a team of researchers from ATR Laboratories in Kyoto, Japan have found that people are more accepting of robots if they engage in a little small talk during conversations, as opposed to leaving unnerving silences that make folks unclear of their intentions. The researchers also found that of the 38 people surveyed, most were willing to accept delays in responses of one or two seconds, but that they much preferred if the robot threw in a “well” or “er” to fill the gap if it was taking any longer for them to muster up an answer. Of course, as we all know, just because a robot shoots the breeze with you doesn’t mean it’s your friend, so you may want to be careful what you wish for.
