5 megapixel Motorola Zine ZN5 to be launched tomorrow?

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Motorola has been working on a 5 megapixel camera phone in collaboration with Kodak for what seems like years. Finally, the partnership might be about to bear fruit with the launch of the new Motorola Zine ZN5 camera phone at the CTIA Wireless conference in Las Vegas tomorrow.

The Zine will be the first phone released since Motorola split itself in two in an attempt to stop the company’s mobile phone division slipping even further into the red. This won’t make the Zine any good, though, as it still comes from a company whose last innovation was to paint the RAZR pink and sell it as a new phone!

More pics and derision after the jump.

Indeed, you get a sense of how bad the new Zine will be when you read that it looks like the ROKR E8 (see the above pic - it’s the phone on the left), which didn’t exactly set the world on fire, and despite having a 5 megapixel camera (which will therefore lead to some pretty huge files), will only come with EDGE connectivity. Yup, that’s right - not even 3G let alone HSDPA, just super-slow EDGE, which gives data transfer speeds not all that dissimilar to ye olde dial-up!

So, prepare for a lot of Motorola hype tomorrow when CTIA Vegas opens its doors, but expect to be sorely disappointed. Motorola’s mobile handset division is in deep trouble at the moment because it failed to compete in terms of style, features, marketing and any kind of understanding of what the consumer actually wants; don’t expect all that to change just because the company has spun off its mobile handset division.

Deutsche Telekom / T-Mobile demands Engadget Mobile discontinue using the color magenta

So last week Deutsche Telekom, owners of the global T-Mobile brand, sent Engadget a late birthday present: a hand-delivered letter direct from their German legal department requesting the prompt discontinuation of the use of the color magenta on Engadget Mobile. Yep, seriously.

Granted, we get nastygrams from angry tech companies practically every day, but rarely regarding anything that’s not some piece of news we published that they’re livid about having out in the open. And irony of ironies, this whole use-of-magenta thing is precisely the topic we took up last year on behalf of DT.

We spoke with David Beigie, vice president of corporate communications for T-Mobile US, who offered: “As a trademark owner, from time to time Deutsche Telekom looks at usage that could lead to confusion in the marketplace. The letter sent by DT merely outlines these perspectives and is meant to simply open a dialogue. Engadget continues to pioneer forums for discussion of wireless industry developments and innovation. T-Mobile respects the role Engadget and its readers play in advancing dialog on these important topics.”

So in the interest of that open dialog we’ve posted Deutsche Telekom’s letter below (typo in the first word of the first sentence and all), as well as a handy guide to allay any confusion should you suddenly find yourself disoriented and trying to buy your next SideKick or MDA from Engadget Mobile.

P.S. -Not an early April Fool’s joke.

Orange Dream’s brainwave management software gets you closer to the Matrix

We’ll be honest — there are quite a few things about the Cyber MC brainwave management solution that remain unclear to us, but it’s probably for the best. Korean startup Orange Dreams has apparently concocted some sort of eyewear / software combo that can control your brainwaves and calm your nerves, convince you that you really aren’t craving nicotine or make you believe that fruits and vegetables really are more delicious than a Cadbury Cream Egg. We’re not about to delve into how this thing actually intends to work, but those unafraid can give it a go next month.

General Dynamics UK touts near real-time 3D maps for soldiers

Filed under: Misc. gadgetsIt looks like soldiers could one day have their own tab key of sorts to call up detailed, 3D maps at will, at least if the folks at General Dynamics UK have their way. As Physorg reports, they’ve developed a “near real-time” 3D map system that makes use of an array of different technologies including LIDAR, thermal imaging and x-ray backscatter techniques to not only display buildings and streets, but objects and people inside buildings as well. The use of LIDAR also promises to provide measurements of doors, windows, and alleys with “millimeter accuracy.” All that obviously makes the system, dubbed Masthead, slightly less than portable, however, although General Dynamics says it’d be able to be carried in the back of a military vehicle or civilian 4×4, or in a plane for that matter. Of course, like most such projects, General Dynamics isn’t just setting its sights to military applications, with it also touting Masthead’s potential benefits for police forces in planning security measures for large events, to name one example.

Motorola A1600 MING to come with Wi-Fi, GPS

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Seemingly official product shots of the still unannounced Motorola A1600 MING have surfaced courtesy of some reliable sources from China. The Motorola A1600 MING is a new addition to Motorola’s not-so-popular MING smart phone lineup, which according to the product page, is the only thing you need. The A1600 MING will feature a 3-megapixel auto focus camera, Linux-based user interface, full stylus-based touch sensitive screen, GPS and Wi-Fi.

The Motorola A1600 MING will have basically the same form factor as other MING handsets, featuring a 17.5 mm thickness and transparent protective outer cover. This is despite rumors that it will have a supposedly better CPU than the original Moto A1200 MING. Details are sketchy for now, other than what I just mentioned regarding its specs, but expect Motorola to roll out an official press release any time soon.

Diary Shower Curtain

Monday, March 31st, 2008

It is always fun to report on gadgets that aren’t really gadgets per se, such as this Diary Shower Curtain. There are no electronic parts here, but I would have to say that this item is downright useful.

I suppose that this product really speaks for itself. As you can see, someone has gone and invented a shower curtain that you can write on. I guess you can write on any shower curtain if you have a waterproof pen, but this one is specifically sectioned off with the 12 months of the year for that purpose.

The curtain also has the days, so you can mark off anyone with the obligatory waterproof pen. This is perfect for that contemplative time that you spend in the shower. After all, I generally remember at least three things that I have to do while I’m soaping myself. It would be good to write them down before I forget them.

The only problem is then I might forget to write them down later in my organizer. I suppose that I’d have to get my organizer and enter the appointments off the curtain once my shower was over. Of course, I’m assuming that I will be looking at my writing from the outside of the shower, which will be backwards since I wrote my notes standing on the inside. (I know that’s a little confusing, but think about it, really.)

So, maybe someone can make an electronically digital version of this, and make it so I can transfer the files into my notebook. Now that would come in handy. Until then, this will have to do.

You can get this item now at firebox.com (UK version) for about £12.95.

Folding LCD Monitor to add a lot of real estate

Monday, March 31st, 2008

More and more geeks are going to a dual monitor setup to not only provide for me monitor space (real estate), but also because it allows for placing tools and uilties on one screen, while the second screen can be used as an actual interface for editing, drawing and other creative endeavors. Sadly, though, because these monitors are separate entitles, one has to deal with the encasement on both interfering with the unbroken image that can move across both screens. That is, until now. If it gets picked up by a manufacturer, this Double-Sided Transforming LCD Display will enable for an unbroken wide screen image, that can also double as a second separate screen. Wow.

At this time, the monitor is only conceptual and as such, a few hurdles remain in the way, chiefly, whether a bezel-less retractable monitor can be manufactured for an affordable price or if it will be the domain of business applications like the tri-screen Zenview Command Center Elite, which uses a a “special lens” that erases the bezel between images. And then there’s the programming involved which would allow for a second channel to be displayed when the monitor is in the back to back position and then switch to the master view when placed in the dual, wide screen mode.

Still, this is where cool gadgets begin, with an idea. If it it can be pulled off, it could be a breakthrough for those who want an affordable, dual screen option.

Only time will tell.

Nokia N96 with Xenon flash leaked image

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Just yesterday, we mentioned that the Nokia N96 will have a Xenon flash. Unfortunately at the time is was based mostly on rumor, so what better way for us to be able to follow that up, with nothing less than a leaked picture of a Nokia N96 with a Xenon flash. While this is far from official confirmation, it certainly seems this rumor has been proven true.

Looks like the Nokia N96 excites as it features a generous 2.8-inch QVGA display, impressive stereo speakers, Wi-Fi, HSDPA, and the much awaited Xenon flash, similar to what Nokia N82 currently has.  Now, I’m pretty much convinced that N96 will be worth the wait. So Nokia, when can we finally get our hands on your new baby?

HP’s Elite 3 megapixel webcam says “hello” in stereo

While it may look like an overhead projector without any hints to the scale, you’re actually looking at HP’s (relatively) tiny Elite Auto Focus Webcam. Compatible with all the major PC-based, video chat solutions out there (Yahoo, Skype, MS Messenger, AIM), the USB 2.0 cam clips onto your monitor and features a 3 megapixel CMOS camera capable of shooting video ranging from 640 x 480 pixels at 30fps quality on down to 1,600 x 1,200 at a stuttering 5fps. It also brings a built-in stereo microphone, face tracking and Magic-i video effects software, 3 programmable buttons, and a sliding “privacy cover” which lets your date know that the camera really is, off.

Free Adobe “Photoshop Express” Graphics Program

If you ever wanted to try one of Adobe's famed "Photoshop" graphics programs here's your chance to test drive their latest "light" version.

I have several versions of Adobe Photoshop that I got for free with various printers, scanners and other gizmos that have come and gone over the years and I have a full blown Photoshop program as well.

The learning curve is steep, that's for sure, even with some of the simpler versions, but the results are worth the effort.

In any event all digital camera owners will want to manipulate their images to some degree so why not give as many graphics programs as possible a whirl, especially when the cost is zero.

Check out this free Adobe Photoshop Express graphics program and take note of the 2 gigs of free online image storage they're also offering.

Take a camera with you whenever possible, and look around, you'll find a picture somewhere.
