ASIMO Improves Its Repertoire

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

An acronym for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility, ASIMO is improving its repertoire and is now dabbling in orchestral music.

ASIMO shows off its musical acuity by conducting the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) on May 13, 2008. It will serve as the conductor to the opening piece “Impossible Dream.” Aside from ASIMO though, the concert will also feature renowned cellist, Yo-Yo Ma. While I maintain that anything metal could never (at least based on current standards) correctly picture the passion that goes with music, I tip my hat to ASIMO, as Honda is doing this to increase awareness of Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s projects meant for children. Honda is even donating $1 million to DSO for the creation of The Power of Dreams Music Education Fund.

Asda will Start Selling Ultra-Low Cost Mobile Phones

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Asda, a supermarket chain, is launching its new project which would sell a mobile phone for as low as 5. No, that figure isn’t missing any zeroes…

Weird as it may sound, you can pick up a phone at Asda for as low as 5 and you don’t even have to buy credits for it. You just purchase some when you need it, otherwise, you’re not required to do so. Available models are Nokia 1112 (which you see on the pic), Sagem My150x, Sagem My212x, and Sagem My220x. According to the spokesperson, the deal is perfect for those whose mobile phones were recently damaged, those who want an extra handset, or those who’re visiting the country. 50,000 of these handsets are set to be sold today in various Asda outlets nationwide. Of course, environmentalists don’t seem to be happy with the deal (and neither am I, come to think of it), as it promotes electronics to be disposable items. We already have enough junk in our landfills to allow thousands of handsets more. Moreover it could serve those whose intentions aren’t exactly so noble–as DailyMail commenter John C. from London says, “This is just what criminals have been waiting for, no one will be able to trace their calls.”

SensorPlug for wireless power outlet

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

The SensorPlug is the first motion sensing electrical outlet in the world, providing safety, security and convenience without breaking the bank.

SensorPlug is like having an extra pair of hands when you need them! The SensorPlug Motion-Sensing Outlet is a passive infrared motion sensor that’s triggered when you walk past, instantly turning on a light or even an appliance, such as a fan or a radio. Since the SensorPlug inserts right into a wall outlet, you don’t need to wire it in! It provides Safety, Security and Convenience at an affordable price. SensorPlug comes complete with a spare fuse and screw for securing to the wall plate, if desired.

I think this is a great device to have in any home, even more so if you’re living alone. After all, walking into a room with your hands full of groceries isn’t exactly the greatest way to make an entrance as you’ll have to fumble your way through to the kitchen counter. The SensorPlug will retail for $19.99 a pop, or you can get two for $35.

WiFi adapter makes you scream “I have got to get me one of these!”

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Remember the scene in INDEPENDENCE DAY when Jeff Goldblum places a satellite like dish on the roof of his dad’s car and triangulates the signal of his wife’s cellphone to determine where she was in the White House? His dad asks him how he can do that and he replies “all cable repair men know how to do this, pop.” Well, the Hi-Gain USB Wireless-300N Dish Adapter from Hawking Technologies won’t triangulate a signal in the White House, but it will boost weak WiFi signals in areas where a signal isn’t very strong to begin with.

With a supports range of nearly 4,000 feet, this 802.11n capable antenna can extend a wireless network up to six times its range and claims a data throughput 12 times the average for transfer speeds in excess of 300Mbps. IN addition, the 300-N is purely plug and play by USB and is portable. Simply plug the 300N into your laptop, install the included software, and direct the HWDN1 towards a wireless source. The result will be blazing speeds when the only open chair at Starbucks is wrapped around rebar yielding a paltry 1 bar signal.

Just don’t tell those invading aliens we can do that. Otherwise they’ll use our wi-fi signal to cripple our defenses.

Cassette MP3 player works with your old tape deck

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

I honestly can’t say that I miss the cassette tape one bit. Sure, I didn’t have a ton of time to really enjoy the format before CDs took over, but anything that you have to rewind isn’t very much fun. Some people still have fond memories of those little plastic cassettes, and want to show off their love. This Cassette MP3 player is perfect for such people.

All you need to do is pop in an SD card loaded with your favorite tracks, and you’re ready to go. It may seem like just a novel case for an otherwise boring mp3 player, however, it does have one trick hidden up its sleeve. If your car still has an old tape deck in the dash, just pop this little device in and it will play music just like any other tape.  $39.99 might be just a little expensive for something like this, but it’s still pretty cool.

Gadgetell Hands On: The Amazon Kindle

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

The Amazon Kindle, while having been released way back in November 2007 somehow feels like a brand new release. I guess when an item sells out within days and remains out-of-stock for about five months it is bound to seem like a new release when it comes back in stock again.

While the Kindle has already been reviewed many times around the Interwebs, I wanted to share my thoughts and feeling towards the Amazon Kindle. Mainly because I feel its overpriced and expensive at $399, but at the same time its (at least in my opinion) well worth the money.

The Kindle would be great for someone who travels often, because it would provide them an easy way to carry multiple books or purchase a new book should they finish, or decide they do not like the one they had thanks to the always connected book store, I do not fit into that category, but can still find the value, let me explain.

Aside the fact that I really enjoy reading, I wanted a Kindle so I would have easy access to purchase new books. I am looking at the Kindle and Amazon as compared to the ipod and the iTunes Store. With iTunes, I can instantly purchase some new music, and while this has caused me to spend more money than I wanted to from time to time, it comes down to convenience. See for me, I live a decent distance from a bookstore and rarely want to make the drive just to buy a book, so I rely on ordering most books, but coming back to the iPod and iTunes Store comparison, I want instant gratification. If I hear about a book or find one online that I want to read, I don’t always want to wait a few days for it to arrive, nor do I always have time to drive to the store, the Kindle solves that problem for me, which for me helps ease the pain of spending $399.

I have had the Kindle for just a few days now, and while it feels a little strange not holding a “real” book, I cannot say that I miss it the feel. The Kindle is lightweight and very easy on they eyes, so far I have read for about 3 hours in two-sittings. It felt a little awkward at first and took some time to get used to the next and previous page buttons, but after an hour of so it had felt like I had been using it for a long time. Time will tell if I end up liking or disliking the Kindle in the long-term but as of now it’s a winner.

iriver E100 sheds speakers, goes aluminum then returns as the E150, E200

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

The popular iriver PMP, the E100, is set to undergo a makeover and should return as a brand new player, either the E150 or the E200. One of the main differences that you will notice between the E100 and the new version, is the difference in the exterior. It will lose the plastic, and return with a nicer aluminum outside, something reminiscent of the silver ipod Nano.

Upon turning on the device, you will also notice the LCD screen to be much brighter and better than the original. Another notable difference, which you may like, or may not, is that the E100 is going to lose the two miniature speakers located on the back of the device. Now, I kind of like MP3 players with built-in speakers, I don’t always like having to use headphones whenever I want to listen to music. However, sometimes people blast their mini speakers and especially if it’s in public it gets annoying. So this goes both ways, depending on your personal preferences and how annoying this is for you.

So far, this is all that is known about the E150 or the E200, expect these to be available in the summer. Stay tuned to find out more when the news becomes available.
