“Brain pacemaker” could treat depression, OCD

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

by Nilay Patel, posted Apr 29th 2008 at 1:46AM
Sending electrical shocks into the brain via a “brain pacemaker” has already led to dramatic breakthroughs like the revival of a man trapped in a vegetative state for six years, but new research may mean that the technique is soon a common treatment for disorders like depression and OCD. Researchers from the Cleveland Clinic, Mass General, Harvard Medical School and Brown Medical School implanted the Medtronics brain pacemaker into 17 people suffering from depression and tracked them for a year, finding significant improvements in mood as well as social and occupational functioning, while 26 patients suffering from OCD were followed for three years and also showed “marked improvement.” Findings will be presented to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons this week in Chicago, and clinical trials are scheduled for later this year — in other news, sales of “The Terminal Man” to neurosurgeons recently skyrocketed for unknown reasons.

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Samsung Techwin has rolled out a couple of new digital cameras known as the i100 and the i80 to its VLUU i Series lineup. Meant for beginners as well as entry-level shutterbugs nicknamed as a ‘Digital Nomad’ by Samsung, both the VLUU i100 and i80 support a multi-charging function which allows data transmission and battery charging through USB without the need and hassle for an adapter. In addition to capturing pixel perfect pictures with its 10.2 megapixel sensor and 3x optical zoom lens, other shared features include a video recording capability, MP3 playback, a text viewer and voice recording. The VLUI i100 will come in silver, dark gray, brown and red colors while the VLUU i80 has only black and silver as your choices. Cassette MP3 Player

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Up until just a couple of years ago, my old Walkman cassette player was still working. It was only recently that it gave out after years of use. For all those feeling nostalgic of old-skool music formats, check this MP3 cassette player out.

This MP3 cassette player could be inserted with up to 2GB of SD memory cards filled with your MP3 tunes. Moreover, it’s also fitted with a 3.5mm jack for your headphones and even a USB 2.0 port so you can directly connect it to your computer. With the features just mentioned, plus its built-in lithium-ion battery, makes it a standalone mp3 player. However, if you’re thinking this is only shaped like a cassette, think again. This device is actually a real cassette tape which you can insert into and run in a cassette player. Good for those still with running cassette players, eh?

Hans Tan’s LED clock spells out time in text

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Apr 28th 2008 at 6:19PM
Those tried-and-true hands definitely get the job done, but glancing over to find out what time of the day it is should be an adventure. Singaporean Hans Tan has crafted quite the atypical timepiece with his Idea of a Clock (revision 2), which utilizes a LED bulletin board to spell out the time in text rather than using symbols, numbers or long sticks. Best of all, those interested in making the act of watching time go by somewhat enjoyable can order one from the artist himself, but considering the limited edition nature of the piece, we wouldn’t waste too much time waffling over pulling the trigger.

DXG-569V HD camcorder available for $169

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

by Paul Miller, posted Apr 28th 2008 at 1:14PM While DXG has few aspirations to taste or quality, they sure know how to price this stuff. The new DXG-569V HD cam can shoot 1280 x 720 video at 30 fps, captures 5 megapixel stills and sports a 3-inch foldout LCD, all for the bargain basement price of $169. Naturally, that video quality probably won’t be putting RED ONE out of a job, and you’ll need to supply your own SD card to make the magic happen, but if that doesn’t dissuade you, you can swipe one from a Radio Shack shelf in silver or black as of today.

Festo AirJelly flies through the air with the greatest of ease

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

by Paul Miller, posted Apr 28th 2008 at 5:46PM We’d explain this thing, but we’re really having trouble taking our eyes off of it long enough to string some full sentences together. Suffice it to say Festo’s AirJelly is powered by some magical jelly fish properties, a lithium-ion battery, an electric motor and a bit of helium. If that’s not floaty enough for you, there’s also a water version, AquaJelly. Videos of both are after the break.

Barbegrill merges dual functions

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

The Barbegrill will definitely confound the older generation, being a mini barbecue grill where one is able to control its heat level so that stuff like incinerated sausages will be a thing of the past.

Thanks to a variable infra-red heat control system, this neat stainless steel grill is capable of cooking food to perfection without cremating it. It can even toast bread and simmer soup (assuming the soup is in a saucepan, of course). Amazing! Fueled by mini A4 Butane Battery gas cartridges (available from all good camping/outdoor stores, and quite a few mediocre ones) the Barbegrill is ideal for campers, festival fans and barbecue buffs. You can even use it indoors, as long as you’re in a well-ventilated space. Built to last and easy to clean, this brilliant cooking companion is also incredibly safe as it features a pressure-activated gas cut-off device.

The Barbegrill is truly one innovative device that brings together the best of both worlds of barbecuing as well as grilling. Firebox is carrying it for £29.95, making it an ideal purchase before the summer arrives.

Planex DigiJuke NAS snags YouTube and BitTorrent video — jams it down the Wii, Xbox 360, iPod… and throat of MPAA

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

by Thomas Ricker, posted Apr 28th 2008 at 3:01AMHere it is copyright bandits, the single biggest reason (besides silicone) to make a Hollywood studio notice you: the MZK-NAS02SG1T network attached storage device from Planex. The main selling point behind the ¥54,799 (about $524) 1TB Gigabit Ethernet block is the claim to “universal access” for all your devices. That little trick comes courtesy of its DigiJuke browser for searching and tagging the BitTorrent and YouTube content you want downloaded in the appropriate PSP and ipod (MPEG-4), Wii (FLV), or TV (MPEG-2) format for in-home or on-the-go viewing. The NAS also streams audio and video to your iTunes laptops or desktops, DLNA TV, Xbox 360, or other compliant device in the home. A front-facing USB 2.0 jack offers one-touch dubbing of USB sticks while a second around back offers ready storage expansion. It ships with a pair of 3.5-inch 500GB drive which you can swap out for higher capacity spinners at a later date. That is if the studios don’t shut you down first.

Traveler-ER USB flash drive

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Traveler-ER, Inc. has rolled out an easy-to-use, progressive solution where storing your personal, medical and emergency contact information is made easy, thanks to the Traveler-ER USB flash drive. It isn’t meant for casual users though, designed with input from emergency medical and travel professionals in order to come up with an easy method to store and ferry vital records with you just about everywhere you go. All the personal information within is stored only on the password protected USB drive and not on any central database, which means you can be sure Traveler-ER Inc. won’t have any sensitive information on you.

Well I guess this is definitely a much more advanced method of carrying around vital information, especially during medical emergencies where the emergency personnel don’t have to go through your wallet and plethora of cards just to know what blood type are you.

The Traveler-ER device helps answer one of the “What ifs” that affect your peace of mind while traveling: What if I have a medical emergency away from home? What if my travel companion doesn’t know anything about my medical history or can’t remember specific information at a critical moment? What if I am traveling alone on a business trip and have a medical emergency? Traveler-ER gives travelers the peace of mind that their medical and emergency contact information is with them, wherever they are.

Some of the information which the $29.95 Traveler-ER USB flash drive allows you to store:

  • Personal Information (Name, address, identifying characteristics and a digital photo)
  • Medical History (current conditions, medications, allergies, immunizations, surgeries)
  • Physician contact information for your primary care physician and/or specialist(s)
  • Emergency Contact Information
  • Health Insurance Information
  • Family Medical History
  • Travel History Information (This may help diagnose an exotic illness contracted while traveling to remote locations)

Microsoft says XP is definitely dead in June, Dell says it’ll keep installing it

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

by Nilay Patel, posted Apr 28th 2008 at 12:45PMSteve Ballmer kicked up a little dirt last week when he said that Microsoft could “wake up smarter” and keep selling XP after the June 30 cutoff date if customer feedback demanded it, but as you’d expect, the company is busily trying to “clarify” that statement by saying that while it always listens to customers, XP is definitely going to die on the 30th. Well, apart from the ultraportable exception that’ll last until 2012 or so. And the backlog of licenses still in reseller’s hands. Oh, and a little company called Dell, which, as rumored, is going to take advantage of a Vista licensing loophole that allows it to sell a copy of Vista but preload XP instead. Yep, that’s the plan — Dell’s going to report a Vista sale to Microsoft, but deliver an XP box with Vista upgrade DVD to customers. (That sound you just heard was a million accountants sighing in appreciation.) The program will be available for Latitude, OptiPlex, Precision, Vostro, and XPS systems (some with a minor fee), and Dell says it’ll keep going as long as Microsoft supports the “downgrade” license option, which could be forever. Looks like June 30 just got a lot less scary for XP fans, no?
