Nikko’s R2 gets an upgrade to R3

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Last year, we broke the news that Nikko Electronics had created the ultimate home theater bot in the R2D2 Projector DVD player, a plucky well put together droid that not only provides comedy relief, but can help you relive that “help me Obi Wan Kinobi” fantasy. Well, now Nikko announces that R2 has gotten an upgrade …

Controlled by a Millenium Falcon remote (which is quite a handful to operate in an of itself), the new R3-D2 sports the ability to project a screen up to 260 inches wide, features 1800 lumens brightness and an amazing 1800:1 contrast ratio. Users can plug in anything from an ipod to a flash memory card, USB drive, and even a game console for those late night Star Wars Force Unleashed forays online in full HD.

R3 is also completely motorized, so users can watch their favorite Scifi movie from just about anywhere inside or outside of the house. It can even tilt the image up to the ceiling for those late night movie dates in bed. R3 even comes with built-in virtual surround sound but can also broadcast on an FM channel so users can take advantage of the HiFi stereo system they recently bought with their stimilus package refund. The cost is @2,900.00/€2,799.00 but you better hurry as it’s currently only available in Europe and in limited quantities (about 4000).

Death Star plans not included. But you can still check out this awesome video of R3 in action.

BlissLights Laser Wand

Monday, May 5th, 2008

I think we all know how much fun a laser pointer can be, but just picture how much fun it would be if you had a device that could make many laser points all at once.

I can only assume this was the idea behind creating the BlissLights Laser Wand. This uses what the company calls a “high diffraction efficiency digital holographic optical element”, which creates a shining starfield effect on any wall. Just think of it as a disco ball without the mirror ball or need of reflected light.

At first I wondered what to do with device, but these pictures to the left gave me some ideas. It certainly would liven up any party for younger people. As the ad says, you can “spin it, twist it, shake it” which makes it something like a kaleidoscope that everyone can see.

Not only will this entertain the young in the dark, but it might be entertaining for adults in the dark as well. I’m not going to go into any detail on that, just use your imagination for that one.

As for power, the BlissLights Laser Wand uses a CR2 battery for about 1,000 hours of usage. The price might be too expensive for peoples’ tastes at about $99.95.

Breitling creates a truly waterproof watch

Monday, May 5th, 2008

When I was a kid I loved watches. For years I wanted one that was both waterproof and had a button which would light up the face. I found out later that there weren’t actually all that many situations where a waterproof watch came in handy for me, but it was still cool nonetheless. What I didn’t understand back then is that the watches weren’t really waterproof, because if you attempted to engage the chronograph, water would seep in. If you’re one that is concerned about such an issue, you’ll be happy to hear that watchmaker Breitling has solved this issue.

This Seawolf Chrono achieves true waterproof status by using strategically placed magnets where your button are. When you press one of the buttons, it will activate another magnet on the inside to create the desired response. This prevents water from ever being allowed inside the watch. I still don’t think that I’ll ever have much of a use for something this fancy, but perhaps some of you divers out there would enjoy it.

Grand Theft Auto - the clean version?

Monday, May 5th, 2008

As you are well aware, the Grand Theft Auto series of video games have had notorious publicity over the years due to its violence, language and even sexual content. With the recent release of GTA IV, the Conan O’Brien show decided to put together a spoof video of what GTA might be like if it was a ‘kinder, gentler, toned down’ version. It’s pretty funny. Take a look (about 1.5 mins):

Could these be images of the upcoming next-gen 3G iPhone

Monday, May 5th, 2008

While these images seem realistic, they could be a mix of just about anything from a Photoshop job to simply being an iPhone knock-off. One thing that is for sure is that these next-gen 3G iphone rumors and sightings are not going to stop until the official announcement comes.

The latest sighting consists of two images and comes courtesy of iPhon.fr, who claim that they cannot verify the source of the images, so take them for what they are worth. Whether real or faked, they certainly look a little more in the ballpark than the last “leaked” image that turned out to be nothing more than a new back piece being sold in Hong Kong.

Luckily June, the rumored release date is somewhat close, lets hope we can put these rumors to a rest. Of course, that just means another will pop up. Keep reading for one more pic, this time of the backside…

MTI Micro showcases fuel cell-powered GPS prototype

Monday, May 5th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted May 2nd 2008 at 11:14AM
MTI Micro is edging dangerously close to vaporware status, but until 2009 comes and goes, we suspect we still owe it the benefit of the doubt. The ever-boastful company is at it once again, this time showing off a purported fuel cell powered-GPS prototype at the International Small Fuel Cells Conference in Atlanta. The Mobion-powered device promises to provide “three times as much energy as GPS devices powered by four disposable AA batteries,” meaning that users could see up to 60-hours of continuous use on a large, full-color screen navigator. You’ll also find an integrated USB port for using it as an energy source, so you could theoretically utilize your NAV to charge your handset / PMP / ray gun. At this point, however, we wouldn’t get too excited here — it’s not like there’s any guarantee that we’ll ever see this thing in commercial form.
