German Company Patents A Smell-Phone

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Just recently, NTT unveiled its external scent atomizer which gives off smells depending on one’s commands sent through the mobile phone. Germany now follows suit…

Germany-based company ConVisual, announced the patented chip which can send scents via MMS or text messaging. Let me rephrase that: subscribers could send any of the 100 available smells from their mobile phones’ to other peoples’ as long as both are designed for this new technology. So, this means that if you’re on a vacation in a tropical island somewhere and you want your mates to feel envious, you can send them the scent of the sea breeze. Or if you’re celebrating an anniversary, you can send an MMS of a bouquet which elicits the smell of roses. Since special phones are needed to uses the chip, ConVisual is currently seeking partnerships with mobile phone companies. Who knows, our German friends might be having their smell-phones soon.

Kensington unveils Battery Pack and Charger for iPhone / iPod

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted May 5th 2008 at 5:03PM
Sure, there are already a handful of options out there for extending the life of your iPhone / iPod battery, but since when have we been ones to gripe about a little competition? Kensington has just introduced a standard and miniature version of its Battery Pack and Charger for iphone / ipod, which unsurprisingly provides juice to your device’s internal battery and can be recharged simultaneously. As you could likely guess, the only differences between the two contraptions are the size, price and battery life; the 0.22-pound standard model extends play time to up to 100 hours (music) / 6 hours (talk), while the even tinier mini version livens things up for another 30 hours (music) / 3 hours (talk). Each is available now for $69.99 / $49.99.

Synaptics ClearPad Sensor

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Those who have purchased the Samsung Yepp YP-P2 portable media player will realize that its touch screen display is actually furnished by Synaptics Inc., and uses the company’s vaunted ClearPad solution. To get a better idea of what the Synaptics ClearPad Sensor actually is, read on after the jump.

Synaptics’ ClearPad is a high-resolution, transparent capacitive touch solution that provides users with a compelling new experience for controlling displayed applications. ClearPad replaces traditional mechanical buttons and sliders enabling an easy-to-use interface and allowing more display real estate for rich content and on-screen interaction. The Samsung Yepp YP-P2 is a Bluetooth-enabled device that features a mp3 player, FM radio, picture viewing capabilities, and video applications that a user can access and navigate directly on the screen, using Synaptics’ ClearPad interface technology. ClearPad provides a quick and easy way to navigate, scroll through, and select digital content, especially with Synaptics’ intuitive gesture recognition.

According to Andrew Hsu, product marketing manager at Synaptics, “The Samsung Yepp YP-P2 media player using Synaptics’ capacitive ClearPad sensor demonstrates the innovative ways we are connecting consumers with technology. We are helping to enable the future of handheld devices by continuing innovations in advanced gestures and character recognition. We strive to bring easy-to-use interaction to the new wave of feature-rich consumer electronics.”

Synaptics’ thin ClearPad sensor is located right under the clear plastic case of the device and on top of the LCD display, making it extremely durable and ideal for industrial design engineers. I wonder whether Apple’s iphone uses Synaptics’ ClearPad solution or some other product - does anybody out there have any idea? If so, Synaptics is clearly raking in the dough considering the insane amount of iPhones that has been sold to date, not to mention the highly anticipated 3G iPhone that is in the works in the near future.

Eco-friendly Hand-Crank USB Power Charger

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

It really wouldn’t be stylish to be caught cranking this USB power charger to rev up your cell phone battery, but in all probability, that would be the last thing on your mind if the battery went lifeless during an important call.

This cute little power charger connects to cell phones, cameras or any device with a USB cord. All you have to do is crank the handle on the charger fto add those few minutes of extra battery time on the connected device. Precious and completely eco-friendly. The charger kit contains adapters to fit most cell phones (Motorola, Samsung, Nokia, and LG) and weighs a negligible 6 ounces. And at $39, it fits the wallet quite decently too. Available from National Geographic Online.

DigiFi, Kleer partner to offer up Opera wireless headphones

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Comfortable headsets are great when you can find them. If they are cordless it’s even better. Now add the ability to listen to your ipod wirelessly for up to 10 hours straight. If that is not enough – what if you and three other people could share the wireless connection? Have I peaked your interest yet?

Kleer (good name when talking about headsets) and DigiFi have joined their resources to give us a cordless headset with CD quality sound known as Opera. A bit rich at $98 but an interesting concept I must say.

Opera is not your ordinary headset. It wraps from behind your head and up over your ears. Earbuds make this headset unobtrusive and as far as looks are concerned – streamlined comes to mind.

Laptop battery shortage should end by Q3

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

by Joshua Fruhlinger, posted May 5th 2008 at 5:23AMAfter a fire at LG Chem, li-on batteries have been hard to come by for companies like Asus and Quanta. But fear not, laptop lovers, because it looks like the battery plant is getting things back in order. According to Sung Fu-hsang at Simplo — a battery manufacturer that relies on LG Chem — the li-on supply will return to normal by Q3 2008. So how bad is the current shortage? Asus CEO Jerry Shen noted that his company could have sold a lot more than 5 million Eee PCs were it not for the problem.

Rumor: Skateboard legend Tony Hawk to get branded Sidekick LX

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Lots of celebrities are using their special tech product, which in some cases leads them to get their own limited edition version. Well the latest rumor involves pro skateboarder Tony Hawk and the possibility of his own branded Sidekick LX. What offers a ring of truth to this rumor is the fact that Tony Hawk actually owns and uses a Sidekick. Tony Hawk was once quoted offering up some high praise regarding the Sidekick;

“I can’t live without my Sidekick, I take it everywhere with me. It allows me to answer emails as they come in instead of coming home to 100 different messages.”

Unfortunately, this is still just a rumor. However, rumor has it that it will launch on July 16, which is just two days before his famous Tony Hawk Boom Boom Huckjam, which is coincidentally presented by the T-Mobile Sidekick. So all evidence points to this phone actually coming out. We’ll let you know if this rumor can be confirmed as soon as T-Mobile gives the official word, so stay tuned!

Smart Shoe Experience

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

VectraSense Technologies, Inc. has rolled out “The Smart Shoe Experience” recently, boasting its revolutionary computerized footwear for the masses. Smart Shoe Experience, eh? Well, this won’t be solving any of your mathematical problems anytime soon, but we do know that The Experience includes a collection of internet attractions featuring cutting-edge smart shoe technology within broader fashion and style contexts. Ronald Demon (what a family name), as a pioneer in the field of computerized footwear and creator of Verb For Shoe, said, “We are not just selling some high tech gadget, but are providing an entire experience which includes technology.”

Signature styling is but one of the attractions of the Smart Shoe Experience, and what would definitely make geeks drool would be the following features :-

  • Auto Comfort: The shoes automatically adjust comfort according to the wearer’s movements.
  • Wireless Link: A wireless link allows the shoes to link with your PC.
  • Contact Sharing: The shoes wirelessly communicate with each other, exchanging contact information among different wearers.

Part of The Experience consists of :-

  • New Romantic: A collection of interactive music videos featuring the shoes in various cultural settings.
  • Tech Square: Describes the raw technology.
  • The Chronicles: A frequently updated blog chronicling the Verb For Shoe phenomena.
  • Ron’s Studio: Gets personal with Ronald Demon, creator of Verb For Shoe.
  • The Nation: An online forum where Verb For Shoe enthusiasts world-wide can share experiences and learn about upcoming events.

According to Demon where the product’s appeal lies, “The Experience is unique in that for the first time, it appeals to both the mainstream fashion audience as well as techies. It combines signature styling, craftsmanship, innovation, lushness, and exclusivity in a compelling package.” The shoe has already seen action on both MTV’s Real World and MTV2, and will be on the History Channel in the fall. This won’t be a cheap piece of footwear though, as it retails for a jaw dropping $700. Now that’s definitely expensive by any standards for a pair of shoes which aren’t half as cool as Iron Man’s boots.
