LG and Samsung team-up against Qualcomm in fight for US mobile TV standard

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

by Thomas Ricker, posted May 14th 2008 at 2:37AM
In a case of oh shiznit, LG and Samsung are combining forces to protect their mobile TV interests in the US. With Qualcomm’s proprietary MediaFLO digital broadcast technology rapidly gaining a mobile TV foothold in the US (thanks to AT&T and Verizon) and Europe standardizing on DVB-H, it seems that LG and Samsung (the once proud and gloating parents of the DMB standard) have little choice but to support the ATSC’s attempt to create the ATSC-M/H standard in the US… about three years too late. Of course, the ultimate victor will have very little to do with what’s best for the consumer and everything to do with who is most successful at lobbying the government. Oh, did that sound bitter? Good.

TomTom cleared to purchase Tele Atlas, Garmin shrugs

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

by Thomas Ricker, posted May 14th 2008 at 6:05AMDespite issuing an early statement of objection, the EC has come around to see the merits of a TomTom / Tele Atlas deal. In fact, the two companies have received “unconditional clearance” from the European Commission for the proposed acquisition. The US already approved the deal in October. Thing is, shareholders better get a move on since the bidding-war-boosted $4.2 billion offer (plus another $300 million thanks to the weakass dollar) made in November is set to expire on May 30th. Although it could be extended. Of course, Garmin made a move for Tele Atlas early on with a $3.3 billion bid of its own. Nevertheless, with TomTom profits heading downward and Garmin’s own, hotly anticipated Nuvifone on the horizon, maybe Garmin will be laughing last after all.

What Blackberry is missing

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

So we’ve seen the Bold, seen that it will be in the same AT&T stable as the iPhone and at roughly the same price.  Brian Caulfield, over at Forbes wrote a post today on “why Apple can’t kill the blackberry.” In his post, Brian goes over the reason RIM is still in the fight is its back-end support.  His argument is the corporate folks need the infrastructure.  Brian misses it too.

What they miss is the internet.  More and more as corporations rely on global data, what goes on in Myanmar (you might remember it as Burma) affects us all today.  From stock prices to weather reports to even data the exists only on the web; businesses are becoming web addicted.  That is the killer app in the iphone: the internet.

Surely, Apple isn’t the first to bring this to consumers.  But they did it in the first way that is actually tolerable, if not fun.  Surfing the web on my ipod touch is fun.  The big screen and intelligent zooming is above all else usable.

The web on Blackberries, Palm, and the slew of WinMo devices doesn’t even come close and largely it has to do with screen real estate.  Maybe I’ve missed it but for me, the killer app is the internet and integrating maps, movies, music and all that great Apple Kool-Aid seems to be not just where Apple is headed, but where the industry needs to focus.

Maybe all we need is a good flip phone…nah.  Anyone seen the Thunder?  Perhaps they’ve got an idea on what is missing?

MSI Wind to land in the US; specs made official

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Yet another ultra-portable to be coming to the market, the MSI Wind is expected to become available here in the US on June 3, 2008 and similar to other notebooks in its class it will be offered with a choice of either Linux Novell or Windows XP Home as the operating system.

Aside from the difference in OS, there are only a few other small details that vary between models. Both will offer a 10-inch display with a 1024 x 600 resolution, an Intel 945 GMS chipset, a 2.5-inch 80GB SATA hard drive, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, a 4-in-1 card reader, 3 USB ports and a built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam.

The Linux version will ship with a 3-cell battery and come with 512MB of RAM, while the Windows version will offer a larger 6-cell battery and have 1GB of RAM installed, it will also be Bluetooth equipped.

The dimensions are also just about the same with both models measuring in at 10.23 x 7.08 x 0.75-inches, and thanks to the smaller battery the Linux version will weigh in at a slightly lower 2.3-pounds as compared to the 2.6-pounds of the Windows version.

The price, at least according to MSI will be at “an affordable sub $500 price point.”

RINGBO the riding robot is for kids, the song is for everyone

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

by Joshua Fruhlinger, posted May 13th 2008 at 2:55PM
Why is this child so happy? It’s because he’s taking RINGBO the riding robot by the horns! See his glee as he cruises around for an entire hour at a blazing 2MPH? Hey, it only took six hours to charge up. RINGBO is controlled by those horn-like joysticks, and we can only hope that front panel contains an IR receiver — one that might give parents hours of pleasure as they override their kids’ intended direction. RINGBO will be shown by Airrobot at this week’s Koreannovation Trade Show in NYC, so we’ll be sure to bring our offspring, as it’s meant for children aged 2-3 and up to 66lbs. We just want to know two things: how much, and can we cheat the 66lb weight limit? Maybe just a little? C’mon. Want to have your mind totally blown? Please watch the video after the break. Please.

[Via OhGizmo!]

And for those of you as into the song as we are, we took the time to transcribe the lyrics:

We are down we’re crazy fools
Every day at school
Teachers here, teachers there
Books and books they’re everywhere!
Come on boys we need to dance
We have got a good chance
Lay your problems on the floor
Clap your hands and sing once more!

Everybody let’s go to the game
We can dance there
Dance and eat ice cream!
Everybody dancing all night long
Try to do it
Sing a happy song!

Music dancing in the night
We can get so high
For no reason, no don’t stop
Now’s the time to take it to the top
It’s a sweet and happy song
Sing all night long
Lay your problems on the floor
Clap your hands and sing once more

Everybody let’s go to the game
We can dance there
Dance and eat ice cream!
Everybody dancing all night long
Try to do it
Sing a happy song!

Time to dance it’s time to sing
Sing a happy song (laugh)
A happy song!
Yo yo yo!

Let’s go!
Let’s go boys!
Come with me and sing!
(A happy song)

Sony Ericsson patent applications reveal wireless digital camera plans

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

by Donald Melanson, posted May 13th 2008 at 12:19PM It looks like your future digital camera could have considerably more wireless options than built-in WiFi or an Eye-Fi card, at least if Sony Ericsson has its way. As Unwired View reports, the company has filed a number patent applications that detail its plans to add various wireless connectivity options to digital cameras, including GSM, CDMA, and WiMAX, in addition to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. That would apparently come both in the form of wireless cards built into the cameras themselves, and in the form of wireless adapters or docks that would attach to the camera, with some dedicated flash memory also thrown in for storing settings for Flickr and the like. Of course, there’s no indication as to when we can expect to see such cameras and, as Unwired View points out, the idea itself may not be the most patentable, but you can sign us up for any connectivity option that doesn’t involve a tangled mess of cords in our gadget bag.

Dell’s 3008WFP is available again, technical issues resolved

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

by Joshua Topolsky, posted May 13th 2008 at 2:29PMFor those of you waiting with bated breath for Dell’s gargantuan 3008WFP 30-inch LCD to return from technical-issue-town, your prayers have been answered. The monster display is back on the company’s virtual shelves, presumably with that “small technical issue” wiped out of existence. So go for it people; that larger-than-life game of Crysis won’t wait forever.

[Thanks, Mert]

Greenhouse claims its DH-SSDGD SSD drive is ‘industry’s fastest’

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

by Joshua Fruhlinger, posted May 13th 2008 at 11:48AMWhen it comes to drives, it’s all about space and speed. That’s why we were happy to see that Greenhouse is boasting that the DH-SSDGS series is the “industry’s fastest” — sure, we can’t verify that claim, but at least they’re trying to get our attention. Regardless, the new drives read at up to 130MB/s with write speeds of 67MB/s, with capacities that range from 16GB up to 128GB. Drive size is a standard 2.5-inches, with a 9.5mm height. Greenhouse says the SATA-compatible boxes will be available in late May (in Japan at least), no word on pricing.

Rumor: The Thunder to debut as first full touchscreen BlackBerry

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

All due respect to RIM for coming up with a sleek and full-featured smartphone such as the BlackBerry Bold, but we couldn’t help feel shortchanged just a little as it doesn’t match up with the iPhone’s look and feel. So, it is but only natural to get excited over the latest rumor circulating around the blackberry name, the Thunder.

Yes dear readers, the group over at BGR are claiming that the latest smartphone from RIM has been codenamed the BlackBerry Thunder. And yes, this time, we just might be staring at the real iphone killer. With its full touchscreen display and only four keys visible upfront - send/end keys, the BlackBerry menu key and the back key, the Thunder may well the next generation of what we can expect from RIM. Rumor has it that the BlackBerry Thunder will also be a worldwide lifetime exclusive on Verizon and Vodafone, so current AT&T subscribers still have plenty of time to think about shifting carriers before the Thunder arrives.

Other juicy details of the BlackBerry Thunder are that it is expected to feature hybrid network capabilities with support for CDMA EV-DO Rev. C and GSM HSPA. The Thunder tentatively carries the model number 9500 which might still change as the official launch approaches. And when will the BlackBerry Thunder come out? Rumor has it during Q3 of 2008. Like we said this is still on the rumor stage, so there’s not too much information available yet, however the touchscreen feature and dual network capability are enough to make us yearn for more information. Sadly the image shown is just a mock-up, but if the final release looks even half-as nice this should be a hot seller.
