ECS to release the 3G-enabled G10IL netbook in September

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

The US netbook market has never been as active as it is today. While MSI and Asus are busy with their head on battle, some other companies are on the side waiting for the right moment to come into the fray. For ECS, September seems to be the right moment to release their own netbook, the ECS G10IL.

Having to follow some seriously tough competition, ECS had to make sure that their netbook would offer something new that others don’t offer. For the ECS G10IL it has to be the 3G network capability as it will have EDGE, HSUPA, and HSDPA mobile broadband support. It will also come with either an 8.9-inch or a 10-inch LCD display. In addition, this netbook will either have the 8GB SSD with Linpus Lite Linux OS or an 80GB hard drive running Windows XP.

ECS is planning to release a white version of the G10IL in September while the black model will come at a later time. The G10IL is expected to have a tentative price tag of $399 and is geared more for business use rather than for educational purposes.

Lamborghini-branded ASUS ZX1 said to be canceled

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

by Donald Melanson, posted Jul 9th 2008 at 2:33PM
It’s been touted and shown off for a few months now, but it looks like ASUS may have finally given up on its luxurious Lamborghini-branded ZX1 smartphone, at least if Alex of MoDaCo is to be believed. According to him, ASUS has cancelled the planned summer launch of the device in order to ensure that “more important devices” scheduled for Q4 of this year are released on time. No word if that means we may still eventually see the pricey phone released sooner or later, but we wouldn’t recommend holding your breath at the moment.

OpenMoko’s FreeRunner interface gets peeked, inspected

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Jul 9th 2008 at 11:47AM
For those folks who don’t mind — nay, who strongly prefer — a terminal screen on their smartphone, we know you’ve already thrown down the plastic on OpenMoko’s FreeRunner. If you’re going insane waiting to get your hands on it, what better to do than read through a remarkably thorough writeup detailing the user interface and all the goop behind the pretty scenes that makes this thing tick? Oh, and if you’re just now getting up the courage to see what the brouhaha is all about, you’ve chosen the perfect time to get schooled. See that read link? Hit it.

Gmail adds new features; Offers account access information, remote log off

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

More and more people are becoming dependent on email, and are using it for more and more sensitive and personal information such as banking. With Gmail being a web based application, its easy to sign in using what ever computer you may have access to at the moment. That could be as simple as your desktop at work, or as sinister as a public terminal. I am sure you have gotten up and left, only to wonder if you logged out or not.

Well just in case, Gmail has taken the worry out of that situation and added some new features.

They now include the ability to check to see where you may be currently logged in aside from the current terminal. Located on the bottom of your Gmail interface you will now see a new addition that will alert you to how many other locations that particular account is open at. It also gives you the IP address and a “Details” link that will offer more information.

Assuming you click on that “Details” link you will be given a more in depth look at how many concurrent sessions are open, recent activity to include the IP address as well as date/time and even the ability to “sign out all other sessions.” Looks like Gmail is at least making an effort to better help us not share our email account access with everyone around.

As expected with Gmail feature updates, this is being rolled out, so if its not available for you just yet, you can expect it to come shortly.

Mio Knight Rider GPS navigation system gets official

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Have you picked up a GPS navigation system for yourself yet? If you have not yet done so, make sure you shortlist the Knight Rider GPS navigation system from Mio. Yes, it has finally gone official. Inspired by the original Knight Industries Two Thousand (a.k.a. K.I.T.T.), you get to impress your lady friends and blokes (I suspect the latter group would be more excited at the sight) with some magic from the original TV series as you make your way across town to your destination within the shortest, most efficient route possible. Just in case you’re wondering what the level of authenticity is like, you’ll be pleased to know that the Knight Rider GPS comes with a Knight Industries-approved LED display and custom voice files for that added touch of realism.

The device’s integrated randomized greetings and 300 custom names will welcome you to your navigation experience. In addition to Mio’s hallmark high-quality navigation, the Knight Rider GPS features an active LED voice synthesizer display that moves in sync with the voice, just as it did on K.I.T.T.’s dash. The Knight Rider GPS can even be programmed to advise drivers of speed limit infractions for those inclined to apply too much turbo boost. The Knight Rider GPS features a 4.3-inch widescreen interface, which allows for more on-screen information and additional details about upcoming intersections. More than four million points of interest will assist drivers in locating gas stations, emergency assistance, hotels and restaurants — turning every trip on the road into an adventure. Like the original K.I.T.T., which had multiple modes including normal, auto and pursuit cruising, the Knight Rider GPS allows drivers to choose routing modes including the fastest or shortest route and highway preference. In a race against mobile assassins or your child’s soccer schedule, the Knight Rider GPS also features a SiRFInstantFixIII GPS receiver, which delivers faster GPS signal locks so drivers can navigate as soon as they are ready to drive.

You can pick up this surefire winner for $269.95.

DIY USB Popcorn Maker: pops corn, explodes your mind

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

by Thomas Ricker, posted Jul 9th 2008 at 4:22AM
You paying attention Redenbacher? Those daring kids at Instructables have created the USB Popcorn Maker from a high intensity heater light, aluminum cup, and mason jar. Add oil, non-Linux kernels, and salt and you’re ready to cozy-up in an uncomfortable three-some with the Wachowski Brothers. Unfortunately, the video posted after the break jump-cuts between USB attachment and the first corn kaboom. But given the 5V USB source, you’ll likely need plenty of time to get the oil boiling. Then again, nobody said this was practical.

Samsung’s low-power 128GB SSDs go mass production on the cheap

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

by Thomas Ricker, posted Jul 9th 2008 at 1:14AM
var Good news on the SSD front. Samsung is now mass producing its 1.8- and 2.5-inch SSDs in both 64GB and 128GB capacities. And since these SATA II SSDs are based on MLC — 64 MLC NAND flash chips of 16 gigabits each in the 9.5-mm thick 128GB SSD — you can expect them to be cheap by comparison to SLC-based SSDs and faster by comparison to traditional laptop hard disk drives while lasting about 20 times longer than the expected 4-5 year life span of that mechanical spinner. We’re talking 70MB/s writes and 90MB/s reads and power consumption rated at just 0.2-watts idle or 0.5 watts when active — far less than any of the models (including the SSDs tested by LAPTOP) tested by Tom’s which should help put any battery consumption concerns to rest. Heaping happy on top of good, Samsung tells us to expect the 256GB SSD to go mass production by the end of the year. Clap clap clap.
