Sylvania enters the netbook market with the MESO

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Sylvania, best know for their TV’s that are sold mainly at Wal-Mart has decided to enter into the already overcrowded netbook market. Sadly the MESO seems to be just another netbook, and overall nothing really special.

The MESO will feature an 8.9-inch display, 1.6GHZ Intel Atom processor, 80GB hard drive and a built-in card reader and webcam. The Sylvania will be running either Windows XP Home or Ubuntu Netbook Remix. Again similar to other netbooks, the MESO will be available in a variety of colors which include onyx, snow, solar and blossom, which are better known as black, white, yellow and pink.

Although it has not officially been announced, the MESO is expected to be available through Wal-Mart and retail for $299 and up.

Put Your Digital Photos On Canvas

Are you a frustrated artist like me, who, despite your best efforts, just can't seem to draw or paint what you envision in your mind?

If so and you still would like to put something you created on an actual artist's canvas then why not have one of your digital camera photos printed on an actual stretched artist's canvas.

There are several ways to do this and prices vary wildly but the easiest way is to upload your image file to an online printing service.

Now, bear in mind that you don't have to upload an image straight from your camera; you can add your own artistic touches to it.

Check out your graphics programs and I'm sure you'll find several options that allow you to impart various effects to the image such as watercolor, conte crayon, oil paint, and others simply referred to as "painterly" effects.

I have applied some of these "filters", as they're called, to some of my images and then printed them at home on artist's watercolor paper. The effect was at least interesting, if nothing else, although I rather liked it.

In any event it was fun and something you can try at home, inexpensively or have one of your best shots done up on canvas.

This is the article that inspired this post about printing digital camera photos on canvas.

The website link provided in that article takes you to the company mentioned, but I couldn't find any information about printing on canvas, so I dug out a few places that print on canvas:

"Create Canvas Prints From Photos".

"Photos Printed On Canvas".

"Art Hammer".

Check this out on Google and you'll find many other places that print on canvas.

Sat Nag: The Anti-Sat Nav and Digital Backseat Driver

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Sat Nav, move over, Sat Nag is here to take your throne. Aptly named, the system is a lampoon of Sat Navs and backseat drivers who can’t seem to keep it down.

If you’re a bit of a masochist and can’t drive without someone nagging you all throughout, the Sat Nag is the perfect device for you. The trenchant remarks go from PG to something that’s better if you don’t let your children hear, but nothing too outrageous. Complete with a caustic, naggy tone, examples are: “I know you’re a man, but it’s been 35 minutes now, so can you please admit you’re lost and ask someone the way” and “In 50 meters I’m going to put on my most annoying voice and say ‘Is your short cut really faster when we get stuck in traffic like this, well, is it darling?” My only gripe is that it’s a woman that’s doing the nagging–come on, where’s the version for us ladies? Men can be nags too.

FireWire 1600 and 3200 approved by IEEE

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

by Nilay Patel, posted Jul 31st 2008 at 2:32AMWhile FireWire 800 gear is still pretty rare and we’ve only seen one piece of FireWire 1600 kit, the IEEE is still pushing the standard forward — it’s just approved the 1394-2008 spec, which includes both FireWire 1600 and 3200. Interestingly, the spec is fully backwards compatible with both 400 and 800 ports, but it remains to be seen which connector gets used more prevalently. We’ll find out in October, when the spec is made available to manufacturers — looks like that controversial 2010 launch of USB 3.0 just got upstaged a little, huh?

ASUS prepping “high-end” Eee PC S-series for September

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

by Thomas Ricker, posted Jul 31st 2008 at 2:04AM
Remember the ASUS Eee PC roadmap we peeped a few days back? Right, the one that lists the new Ultimate S-series and Pro Fashion Eee PCs amongst the 23 models. Turns out both categories are planned for a 2008 launch with specs like dual-core Atom processors, 120GBs of hard disk, and 32GB SSDs. This according to ASUS president, Jerry Shen. The first Eee PC with a 32GB SSD (wink wink Buffalo) will launch in late September and feature a 10-inch, 16:9 aspect LED backlit display and battery life of about 4-5 hours. As members of the Exquisite and Extremely slim and light S-series, these Eee(ee) PCs will cost between $700 to $900 with the “high-end market” in mind. Funny, we didn’t know there was a high-end to the race to the bottom.

Ridax first company to overprice iPhone 3G charging adapter

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

by Nilay Patel, posted Jul 30th 2008 at 9:40PMAlthough the 30-pin Dock connector in the iPhone 3G looks the same as it has since it was introduced in the 2G ipod, it’s different in one important (and maddening) way — it doesn’t support charging the older FireWire charging pins, only the newer USB method. That means a whole host of older chargers and docks don’t work with the iphone 3G — and it also means that we’ll be seeing a lot of adapters like this one from Ridax make the scene. Hopefully other manufacturers won’t see fit to charge a whopping $40 for two connectors and a resistor like Ridax, but if you’re desperate enough to drop two Jacksons on this thing, you’ll also be able to charge through the built-in mini-USB connector on the side. We’ll wait, though — we expect to see some cheaper, smaller options on the table by the time this thing ships in September.

LG’s BD300 Network Blu-ray player to stream Netflix in September

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

by Thomas Ricker, posted Jul 31st 2008 at 12:35AM
We’ve been following the rumor since January, today it’s official: LG’s BD300 Network Blu-ray Disc Player will begin streaming Netflix movies in the US this September. The player will cost “well under $500″ and allow Netflix members to stream more than 12,000 standard definition TV and films through the device at no additional increase to their monthly paid subscriptions. Members will use the Netflix website to add movies or TV to their individual instant queues. Movies will begin playing in as little as 30 seconds when selected from the TV where users can browse, make selections, read synopses, rate movies, and fast-forward / rewind video streams using the BD300’s remote control. While specs on the player itself are scarce, we do know that it supports BD Live and LG’s SimpLink technology to integrate easily with LG TVs and AV products. One thing’s for sure, with this deal announced and those with Roku and the Xbox 360 in the bag, it looks like Netflix is grown-up and ready for the digital age.

Samsung F480 First Take Reviews - CNET Australia

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

CNET Australia does a first take review of the Samsung F480 and writes, “Unlike the Prada phone, the F480 comes with a much stronger suite of features. Besides HSDPA, the tri-band handset supports Bluetooth stereo for listening to music via a pair of wireless cans. There’s also a 5-megapixel camera module with autofocus, LED flash and face-detection capabilities…The SGH-F480 is something worth waiting for if you are in the market for a basic touchscreen phone, however, there’s no news on a date for Australian launch at this stage.”

Portugal signs up for 500,000 Intel Classmate laptops

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

by Nilay Patel, posted Jul 30th 2008 at 11:37PMLooks like Intel’s clearing out all its Classmate inventory in preparation for that new model — it just inked a deal with Portugal for 500,000 of the chubby gray laptops. The Classmates will be manufactured in Portugal as part of the deal, and the final subsidized cost to students will vary based on each family’s income, with a max of €50 ($78). Kids should be getting their new machines at the start of the new school year, so it looks like things should be moving along quickly here.
